Hidden Doesn’t Mean Forgotten

The Wilderness Isn't Wasted

We live in a world that celebrates arrival.

The promotion. The breakthrough. The dream realized.

We admire the moments when someone finally steps into their purpose, but rarely do we appreciate the long road that got them there. We love the crown, but we often overlook the wilderness.

The problem is that many of us find ourselves in seasons that feel like waiting rooms. We know God has placed something on our hearts, yet our reality doesn't seem to match the vision. Doors remain closed. Progress feels slow. Questions outnumber answers.

And when that happens, it's easy to wonder if we've somehow taken a wrong turn.

But what if the wilderness isn't a detour?

What if it's the path?

God Does Some of His Best Work in the Wilderness

Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly uses seasons of isolation, uncertainty, and preparation before launching people into their calling.

Moses spent forty years tending sheep in the wilderness before leading Israel out of Egypt.

David was anointed king as a young man, yet years passed before he ever wore the crown.

Joseph received dreams of leadership but found himself in a pit, a prison, and a series of situations that looked nothing like God's promise.

Even Jesus spent forty days in the wilderness before beginning His public ministry.

The pattern is hard to ignore.

God often develops character before responsibility.

We want immediate impact, but God is interested in lasting transformation.

As Isaiah reminds us:

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the Lord.

Isaiah 55:8 (NIV)

The wilderness often feels like God is delaying us.

In reality, He may be preparing us.

The Hidden Season Has Purpose

One of the greatest lies we can believe is that if nobody sees our progress, then nothing important is happening.

But some of the most significant growth occurs underground.

A tree's roots are formed long before its branches stretch toward the sky.

The same is true for us.

In hidden seasons, God develops qualities that can't be rushed:

  • Patience

  • Humility

  • Dependence

  • Faithfulness

  • Trust

These things are rarely built during moments of comfort or success.

They're forged when we keep showing up despite uncertainty.

When we pray and don't immediately receive an answer.

When we remain obedient even when the results aren't visible.

When we continue moving forward one faithful step at a time.

As Paul writes:

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

Romans 8:28 (NIV)

Not some things.

All things.

Even the seasons we wouldn't have chosen.

Don't Confuse Preparation with Absence

One of the hardest parts about the wilderness is feeling forgotten.

You see others moving ahead.

Opportunities seem to appear for everyone else.

You wonder if God still remembers the dream He placed in your heart.

David likely felt that way while running from Saul.

Joseph may have felt that way sitting in prison.

Yet God's silence never meant God's absence.

Just because you can't see movement doesn't mean God isn't working.

Seeds don't stop growing simply because they're buried beneath the soil.

In fact, that's where growth begins.

Sometimes God is doing His deepest work in the places where we can least recognize it.

The truth is that preparation rarely feels exciting while it's happening.

Only afterward do we understand its purpose.

Faith for the Middle

It's easy to have faith at the beginning of a journey.

Dreams are exciting.

Possibilities are endless.

It's also easy to have faith at the end when the promise is fulfilled.

The real challenge is having faith in the middle.

The middle is where doubts surface.

The middle is where progress feels slow.

The middle is where quitting becomes tempting.

Yet that is exactly where faith becomes real.

Hebrews tells us:

"Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."

Hebrews 11:1 (NIV)

Faith isn't believing when everything makes sense.

Faith is trusting God when it doesn't.

Keep Walking

Maybe you're in a wilderness season right now.

Maybe you're waiting for clarity.

Waiting for an opportunity.

Waiting for a breakthrough.

Waiting for a dream to become reality.

If so, remember this:

The wilderness isn't evidence that God has abandoned your story.

It may be evidence that He's still writing it.

The season you're in today could be preparing you for the assignment you'll step into tomorrow.

So don't quit.

Don't rush the process.

Don't mistake preparation for punishment.

Keep walking.

Keep trusting.

Keep becoming.

Because the God who calls people into great stories is also the God who prepares them for the role.

And in His hands, no wilderness is ever wasted.
